The institute formerly known as Tarawa Technical institute was established in 1970 with three departments only. Since then more departments have been established and recently there are 10 departments altogether. There are more departments like plumbing to be established to meet the needs. Current departments deliver a wide range of programs and develop new ones which are tailor-made to suit the need of our customers.

Arrangements with some overseas institutes are the ongoing efforts not only to get world wide accredited but also for the students to further their studies abroad. The Kiribati Institute of Technology is now the premier provider of technical and vocational education and training in Kiribati.

Currently the Kiribati Institute of Technology is located in Betio, Tarawa, which is the capital of Kiribati.  It is a division of the Ministry of Labour and Human Resource Deveopment.
